Kate
Chris left for Sioux Lookout today; enthusiastic I think about his work, and with a little hope around the murder stuff. He called me a little after ten to let me know that he had arrived in one piece and that he was going to call Elizabeth right away. After he'd met with Bob Wong he had become a little more energized. I remember him bustling into our room that night right after I'd turned out the lights. He turned them on again."
"Kate," he said, "we gotta talk - I've just had a long discussion with Bob about the murders and he's suggested a process and given me some ideas."
"So who did it?" I asked innocently.
"That's not the point." Here I groaned aloud. "The point is that if you and I approach this differently we should be able to discern much more than we have; see the obvious. Can we drop off the kids tomorrow and go out for dinner?"
"You were out for dinner tonight." I reminded him. "Did you pay?" I let him sweat for a moment then responded. "Sure, I guess. Did Bob give you anything concrete?"
"He said that we would get the answer through Allain." Here I made a face. I didn't like the guy. "I know but it's something. How are the kids?"
"Sleeping, and so am I. G'night."
I think it was me who suggested Italian, southern; I wanted tomato sauce, garlic, basil and of course, vino rosso. Chris wanted Chianti and I went along even though they are almost as expensive as the cheap Barolos. Pastaverdi! was uptown, north on Yonge Street, so it didn't take long to travel from Scarborough.
Marcello sort of remembered me from the corporate lunch scene; and treated us with deference. Chris was somewhat of a disappointment to him after some of the rich looking hotshots who had accompanied me previously but I thought that it only showed to my practised eye.
"That waiter doesn't like me." Chris said shortly after we were seated. "Do you know him?"
"I told you that I used to come here for work. He's like that with everyone," I lied. Chris looked dubious.
"If you say so." And so we began to discuss the murders over the antipasto, soup, fish, bunny, salada, gelato and coffee. Both the meal and discussion were ultimately heavy going but worth it. We reviewed Gilbert's story, various characters, ruled out Bob Wong as a suspect and after awhile decided to get drunk, leave the car at the restaurant and take a cab home and fool around. I began to giggle, which made Marcello a little jealous of Chris. But that was OK and I began to feel a little of the affection that had so long been missing between Chris and I.
I began to giggle over the amaretto and told Chris that I hoped that Allain had done it.
"Why don't you like him?" he asked.
"I just think he's creepy. "A tear fell down my cheek; I was sobering up rapidly. I raised my hand for Marcello.
